The most important thing you can do for an elderly or ill pet is to keep them comfortable<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your pet sees their veterinarian regularly and that health conditions are treated as they arise (undiagnosed conditions can lead to further discomfort and worsening of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishtownvet.com\/blog\/pet-wellness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up comfortable beds for your pet near the family\u2019s activities, so they can still feel included.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep up with your pet\u2019s hygiene, including grooming and toothbrushing. Check your pet regularly for signs of incontinence (we\u2019re happy to advise you on how to help an incontinent pet).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because your pet is a senior doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t need as much love and affection. Shower your pet with attention to remind them that they\u2019re still a valuable family member.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call us immediately if your pet shows signs of pain, such as excessive panting, obvious agitation, whimpering\/vocalization, refusal to move, or loss of appetite. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palliative and Hospice Care<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the situation, palliative or hospice care can be a loving option when you and your veterinarian have determined that your pet\u2019s condition is no longer treatable. Palliative or hospice care is mainly provided by you at your home; it involves making your pet\u2019s last days or weeks as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishtownvet.com\/staff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mary Kwacz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available to assist and advise you in the following areas of palliative care:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper use of pain medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appropriate dietary strategies (to encourage eating and diminish digestive upset)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interaction with family members and other loving humans and pets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please keep in mind that palliative care is not meant to unnecessarily prolong the life of a suffering pet, but rather to create an atmosphere of dignity and support in their final days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Time Comes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your pet\u2019s quality of life has deteriorated beyond a certain point, you and your veterinarian may need to consider whether euthanasia is appropriate.
